From Lisbon, Porto or Faro by car, one has to head for Coimbra on the main Motorway A1 from north to south.
At junction 13 one turns inland onto the IP3 towards Viseu. One will see place names like Luso and Bucaco,whereafter one passes Penacova which can be seen on right of the road. Pass the long bridge over the Mondego river and after a few more kilometres keep a good look out for an inconspicuous sign which appears unexpectedly and reads O.Hospital /Guarda / Covilha. Follow that sign onto the IC6. After about 10km, where it becomes a two-way road, it automatically becomes the EN17 or N17.Drive on approximately another 25km, passing villages like Venda do Porco, Venda da Esperanca and Vendas de Galizes until you reach a Repsol garage on the left. Here you turn left to Oliveira do Hospital and drive for 3km to reach the city.

From Britain, Holland or Belgium by car, one has to head for Paris
From here the route very simply goes to Bordeaux, Bayonne, Hendaye (the border of Spain) San Sebastian, Bilbao, Burgos, Valladolid and Salamanca to Vilar Formosa which is the border with Portugal. (The tolls from Paris are about 67 euros = 2004)
One enters Portugal and on the IP 5 you bypass Guarda on the left heading for Celorico da Beira.
!!! Just before you get to Celorico keep a look out for the turnoff to Coimbra and the EN 17 !!!
If you miss this it is very difficult to find one's way back. If this happens carry on to Viseu and you will have to find the road from Viseu to Oliveira do Hospital yourselves and phone me to fetch you in Oliveira.
If you don't miss the turnoff, you will enter the edge of Celorico and come upon a roundabout. Go 3/4 way around it, thus effectively turning left. A little way further (50m ?) is a road turning left again. Take this and drive down the hill for approx 100 m (?) to turn right onto the EN 17 towards Coimbra.
Great ! Now it is plain sailing all the way. You will drive through many little villages and pass the turnoff left to Gouveia to eventually see the big town of Seia lying left, on the slopes of the Serra da Estrela. Nearing Seia one will come to two roundabouts one after another. At the first one take the 2nd exit (thus straight ahead, on to the 2nd one) At the second one take the first exit (thus straight ahead past the petrol station and up the hill) towards Coimbra. Do not go past Lidl (supermarket) into Seia.
From here you drive towards Oliveira do Hospital (approx 14km). Nearing there you will pass the big smoky wood factory on the right, then another Lidl on the left. Carry on straight ahead. Another 500m further is a turnoff to the right to Oliveira do Hospital. Turn right and drive 3km to reach the city.

Van Lissabon, Porto of Faro per auto, naar Coimbra maakt men gebruik van de belangrijkste Autosnelweg A1 die van noord tot zuid Portugal ligt. Bij afslag 13 rijdt men tweebaansweg de IP3 op richting Viseu. Men zal plaatsnamen zoals Luso zien en Bucaco, volg het bord richting Penacova die men recht van de weg kan zien. Ga de lange brug over de rivier Mondego over en na een paar kilometers verschijnt een richtingaanwijzer waarop je O.Hospital/Guarda/Covilha kunt lezen. (Goed kijken, valt niet erg op.) Volg dat teken op IC6. Na ongeveer 10km wordt het automatisch EN17 of N17. Deze weg ongeveer 25 km volgen.... men passeert de dorpen zoals Venda do Porco, Venda da Esperanca en Vendas de Galizes om uiteindelijk bij een Repsol garage te arriveren waar u links draait en na een verdere 3km zo de stad inrijdt!
Van Groot-Brittannië, Holland of België met de auto, rijdt men via Parijs de route zeer eenvoudig naar Bordeaux, Bayonne, Hendaye (de grens Frankrijk - Spanje) San Sebastian, Bilbao, Burgos, Valladolid en Salamanca naar Vilar Formosa de grens Spanje - Portugal. (De tol van Parijs is ongeveer 67 euro = 2004) U gaat Portugal in en op IP 5 passeert u Guarda volt links richting Celorico DA Beira. !!! Als u bijna Celorico nadert volgt u de richting Coimbra, de EN 17!!! Als u deze afslag mist is het zeer moeilijk om snel terug te rijden. Als dit gebeurt volg richting Viseu en ga richting Oliveira do Hospital Wanneer u contact met ons opneemt zullen wij u treffen in Oliveira .
Als u de afslag niet heeft gemist komt u aan de rand van Celorico en komt u op een rotonde. Ga 3/4 rond, dus linksaf slaan, ongeveer 50 meter verderop links afslaan. Doorrijden en onderaan de heuvel (ongeveer 100 meter) komt u op EN 17 en gaat u richting Coimbra.
OK, U zult door vele kleine dorpen rijden en de afslag Gouveia passeren. Hier ziet u de grote stad Seia uiteindelijk links zien liggen, op de heuvels van Serra da Estrela. Naderend Seia kom je twee rotondes tegen. Bij de eerste ga je rechtdoor. Bij de tweede ga je bij de eerste afslag eraf. (Rechtdoor rijden voorbij de benzinepost en de heuvel omhoog) richting Coimbra. Ga niet voorbij Lidl (supermarkt) in Seia. Van hieruit richting Oliveira do Hospital (ong. 14km). In Oliveira zult u de grote rokerige houten fabriek rechts zien, en de Lidl links. Ga rechtdoor. Nog eens 500m verder ziet u een afslag Oliveira do Hospital. Neem deze afslag en rij zo na een verdere 3km de stad in.
