Shopping
Shops are usually open from 9am to 1pm and re-open from 3pm until 7pm. Large shopping centres in the cities have sprouted up in recent years and have longer opening hours usually from 10am to 11pm.
Markets
Going to the street market is a social and commercial occasion and integral to Portuguese life. Normally held in the towns' main squares, there is usually a festive air and eating is a very important part of it. The smell of greasy barbequed chickens and pork can be smelt from afar.

These are BIG in Portugal, and are held all over the country, usually on an annual basis and in summer Visited by people from far and wide, again a reason to celebrate, eating lots of meat and feasting
in general. A jovial spirit prevails and this is where people often cannot resist spending their hard earned money on the much loved hand-made products. In the southern parts of the country where the sobriety of the north is not as evident, these fairs are also used as an opportunity to parade around in the latest fashions. Blaring music generated by obscure bands keeps everyone buzzing way after midnight even the children. Great fun,and interesting craftwork. Should be experienced, if only once.

Winkels
De winkels zijn gewoonlijk open van 9Am tot 1Pm en heropenen van 3Pm tot 7Pm. De grote winkelcentra’s in de steden komen de laatste jaren opzetten en hebben gewoonlijk langere openingstijden van 10Am tot 11Pm.
Markten
Het gaan naar de straatmarkt is een sociale en commerciële gelegenheid en hoort bij het Portugese leven. Normaal wordt deze gehouden op de centrale plaatsen van een dorp of stad. Op afstand kun je de heerlijke geuren van eten (vettige kippen aan de barbecue en het varkensvlees wat is gespietst) ruiken wat een belangrijk onderdeel is van een bezoek aan de markt.
De ambachtmarkten
Deze zijn GROOT in Portugal, en worden gewoonlijk jaarlijks door het hele land gehouden.
In de zomer komen mensen van heinde en verre naar deze markten om te feesten en heerlijk te eten.
Er heerst een joviale sfeer en dit is waar de mensen vaak hun zwaar verdiende geld kunnen uitgeven aan de hun geliefde handgemaakte producten.
In de zuidelijke delen van het land waar de gematigdheid van het noorden niet duidelijk is, worden deze markten ook als kans gezien om in de laatste mode rond te paraderen. Meezingend met muziek die door duistere banden wordt geproduceerd laat iedereen meedeinen tot ver na middernacht, zelfs de kinderen. Grote pret, en interessant handwerk dit zou men toch zeker eenmaal moeten ervaren.
