Serra da Estrela (Mountains of the Stars).
Nothing in Portugal, can ever beat this fantastically beautiful mountain
range. visile for many miles in each direction, 1993 metres above sea level at its highest point, it has layers of different worlds as one drives up to the top, some green and lush and some hard, bare and stony.
Every different trip there will be a new experience. Driving through
a terrifying blizzard with snow 3 metres thick on each side of the road. Driving in thick fog,
the bare open isolated stretches of scenery look like one is on the moon. On a lovely
warm day, blue sky, clear views below seem to stretch over the whole of Portugal.
The Black Madonna, is a life size statue of the Virgin Mary, hewn out of the rocks along
the roadside near the peak. In the little mountain villages they sell puppies along the
roadside and it can be quite hard to resist having a look inside the interesting craft shops
selling sheepskin products, mountain cheese, hams, sausages, honey, liqueur, thick brown
rye bread, handknitted chunky jerseys and colourful ceramics. If there is only one place
in Portugal to see, this is IT.
Coimbra:
Only 42 km away from the coast, this lovely old University town is a must to visit even if it
is just once. Visited by many tourists including many Portuguese ones, there are a
myraid of tourist attractions to visit including a mini Portugal for children. The
cathedrals are impressive if one likes visiting churches as well as the University itself.
The allegedly best Orthopedic hospital in the world, also finds itself in this friendly city.
Conimbriga: About 20 km south of Coimbra not far in from the main Lisbon highway,
is the most interesting of Roman ruins. Exquisitely preserved mosiacs cannot fail to
impress and delight all those who take the time to visit. Also to be seen are an
aquaduct and baths. There are interesting remains of big houses as well as shops.
Lousa: Lousa brings to mind the words "wood" and "forest" and so it is not strange
to find that there is a big paper factory. 2 miles south of the town, high up in the
forests is the remains of an interesting old castle. Beside this, tucked in the folds of
the hills are three shrines forming a sanctuary called Our Lady of Piety. A long
climb up, but well worth it. Many little winding paradisical walking paths can be
followed along the river by those who love exploring.

empty bottle(s) and fill them up with the delicious water for free. Many Portuguese
and some foreign people visit there to benefit from the therapeutic value of the hot
water which is alleged to relieve many who suffer from ailments like rheaumatism, of
their symptoms. This famous water can be purchased in bottled form all over the country.
In Luso there are also some grand hotels and an interesting souvenir street market, a
lovely rolling garden park and a tea house with delicious cakes to thrill the palate.

This is what I imagine the real paradise to look like. Part ancient woodland and part
aboretum, it is a magic place, filled with centuries old cycads and other prehistoric
seeming plants and trees. Long shady winding walks and tracks, crossing over streams
and passing the little chapels and grottos of the hermits who used to roam there. Most
interesting of all is the former Manueline monastery, now the luxury Grand Palace Hotel.
If the outside is impressive, one will rave about the internal architecture and decoration.

Hanging on the the bleak precipices of the Serra de Acor, this is called the most authentic
Portuguese village. Absolutely everything is built of slate even the streets where it is laid
vertically. Out of the way, and, until recently, only reachable with a 4 x 4, it is definitely
worth a visit.

This is an individual little city, with whitewashed fishermans' houses, along canals,
very flat and often misty, and is surrounded by lagoons. Architecturally it is interesting
due to the many colourful candy striped wooden fishermans cottages built along the
dunes as well as some Arte Nouveau mansions in the city. The fish market is a hive of
activity in the early mornings when the previous night's catch are peddled. Interesting
city.

Mira:
This is one of the three most popular beaches along the west coat of Central Portugal.
A long wide white beach, it is one of the quieter ones around, so ideal for those who
seek to sunbathe in peace and quiet. A few nice fish restaurants are located along
the boulevard.

Figueira da Foz:
This city situated on the west the coast is amazingly cosmopolitan and lively. It is
here that a great part of the Portuguese population themselves holiday. In summer
the beach is packed with visitors and the boulevard often one long tailback of
sportscars, buggys and mopeds.With an unbelievably wide beach this is THE holiday
centre of the north.

Naast ons dagelijks leven!
Serra DA Estrela (Bergen van de Sterren).
Niets in Portugal kan op tegen deze mooie fantastische bergketen welke mijlenver te zien is vanuit vele richtingen. De berg is op het hoogste punt 1993 meter boven zeeniveau. Je waant je in verschillende werelden tijdens de klim. Sommige gedeeltes groen en kun je wegdromen en andere grillig, naakt en rotsachtig. Iedere klim zal anders worden ervaren. Soms angstig door een sneeuwstorm en een drie meter hoge dikke sneeuwduin aan ieder kant van de weg. Of rijdend in een angst aan jagende dikke mist, het naakte open gestrekte vergelijkend met een maanlandschap.
Op een mooie warme dag, met een staalblauwe hemel, schijnen de vergezichten zich uit te strekken over geheel Portugal.
Onderweg kom je de Zwarte Madonna tegen. Dit een standbeeld van de levensgrote Maagdelijke Maria, welke uit de rotsen langs de kant van de weg dicht bij de piek wordt gehouwen.
In de kleine bergdorpen verkoopt men puppies langs de kant van de weg. Het kan vrij moeilijk zijn bij een blik op deze aandoenlijke lieve hondjes om door te rijden en niet te stoppen om er eentje te kopen.
In de winkels verkoopt men schapenhuidproducten, bergkaas, hammen, worsten, honing, likeur, dik bruin roggebrood, handgebreide ruige jerseys en kleurrijke keramiek.
Als er slechts één plaats in Portugal die je niet mag missen is dan is dat DIT.
Coimbra:
Slechts 42 km vanaf de kust ligt Coimbra. Deze mooie oude Universitaire stad is een must om te bezoeken al zul je er maar één keer in je leven komen.
Bezocht door vele toeristen maar ook Portugezen van heel Portugal heeft deze stad veel toeristische attracties te bieden, zelfs een “mini” Portugal voor kinderen.
De kathedralen zijn indrukwekkend als men van het bezoeken van kerken en historische gebouwen houdt evenals de universiteit.
Het naar verluidt beste Orthopedische ziekenhuis in de wereld, bevindt zich ook in deze vriendschappelijke stad.
Conimbriga:
Ongeveer 20 km ten zuiden van Coimbra niet ver van de snelweg naar Lissabon zijn de interessante Romeinse ruïnes. Uitstekend bewaarde mozaïeken die u ontroeren en wel indruk op u moeten maken als u deze bezoekt. Een aquaduct uit de oude tijd en Romeinse baden kunt u er ook zien. Er zijn overblijfselen van grote huizen en winkels.
Lousa:
Lousa herinnert u aan de woorden “hout”en “bos”. Het is dus niet vreemd dat u hier een papierfabriek aantreft. Ongeveer 2 kilometer ten zuiden van de stad omhoog de bossen in treft u nog overblijfselen van een oud kasteel. Hiernaast in de glooiende omgeving zijn nog drie heiligdommen gevormd, genoemd Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Piety. Een lange klim omhoog over paradijselijke winderige paadjes langs de rivier die zijn weg is aan het zoeken. Maar zeker de moeite waard.
Luso:
Dit is waarschijnlijk de beroemdste Bron van Portugal stad waar u uw 5 liter lege fles (sen) mee naar toe kunt nemen om deze met het frisse zachte bron water te vullen.
Dit wordt door veel inwoners van Portugal gedaan en zo komt u kosteloos en veilig aan eerlijk water.
Vele Portugezen en sommige buitenlanders bezoeken Luso om van de therapeutische waarde van het hete water te genieten. Men zegt dat het een heilzame verlichting geeft bij de pijnen van veel kwalen zoals bij reumatische pijnen. Dit beroemde water kan in gebottelde vorm in heel Portugal worden gekocht.
In Luso kan men sommige grote hotels vinden en een straat met interessante souvenirs winkels. Een prachtige tuin met een theehuis waar u zich tegoed kunt doen aan heerlijke cakes.
Bucaco:
Dit is wat ik het echte paradijs op aarde vind. Een gedeelte met oude bomen en een deel aboretum Het is een magische plaats gevuld met eeuwenoude cycads en andere prehistorische natuur verschijnselen van planten en bomen.
U kunt er lange winderige schaduwrijke wandelingen maken die over stroompjes loopt waarbij u kleine kapelletjes en grotten passeert waarin de zwerver overleefde.
Het interessantste van alles is het oude Manueline klooster, nu het luxe grote Palace Hotel. De buitenkant is indrukwekkend maar eenmaal binnen gekomen wordt men overweldigd door de architectuur en de inrichting van het hotel.
Piodao:
Tegen de sombere bergkant van de Serra D’Acor hangend wordt dit het authentiekste Portugese dorp genoemd. Alles wordt uitsluitend gebouwd van lei, zelfs de straten waarin het verticaal wordt gelegd. Absoluut de moeite waard om dit dorpje welke uitsluitend bereikbaar is met een 4x4 aandrijving, te bezoeken.
Aveiro:
Dit is een specifiek klein stadje, met witte vissershuisjes langs de rivieren, zeer vlak en meestal nevelig en door lagunes omringt.
Architectonisch interessant wegens de vele kleurrijke plattelandshuisjes van suikergoed gestreepte houten vissershuisjes die langs de duinen goed worden gebouwd in vergelijking met sommige herenhuizen van Arte Nouveau in de stad. De vissersmarkt is een bijenkorf van activiteiten in de vroege ochtend wanneer de vangst van de vorige nacht wordt verkocht. Interessante stad.
Mira:
Dit is één van de drie populairste stranden langs de westkust van Centraal Portugal. Een lang, breed wit strand, en één van de rustigste stranden in de buurt. Dus ideaal voor diegene die in vrede willen genieten van de krachten van de zon. Met een paar aardige visrestaurantjes gevestigd langs de boulevard.
Figueira da Foz:
Deze stad is een ongelooflijke kosmopolitische en levendige plaats aan de westkust. In de zomer gaat een groot gedeelte van de Portugese bevolking hier naar toe op vakantie. De stranden zijn volgepakt met vakantiegangers en aan de boulevard kunt u vele sportauto’s geparkeerd zien staan alsook motors en bromfietsen. Het strand is een zeer groot opvallend mooi breed strand waar veel strandhuisjes zijn waar u op het heetst van de dag in weg kunt kruipen om een siësta te houden en u meegebrachte lunch kunt nuttigen. Fiqueira da Foz is dè vakantiestek van het noorden!
